How do Bitcoin Cash wallet addresses work?

Modified on Sun, 10 Nov at 11:12 PM

If you've set up a Bitcoin Cash (BCH) wallet and added an address for sending crypto in your address book, there are some important considerations to remember regarding BCH addresses at Hata.

History of BCH

BCH was created in 2017 after a fork of Bitcoin (BTC), so BCH legacy address formats are the same as normal BTC address formats. To distinguish itself from BTC, and to avoid confusion and accidental mistakes when sending funds from one crypto platform to another, BCH introduced a new address called CashAddr (cash address format).

BCH Addresses

Hata uses the BCH CashAddr format with the "bitcoincash:" prefix and does not support legacy addresses. While the official CashAddr format includes the "bitcoincash:" prefix, some exchanges and wallets, exclude it.

Here’s the correct format to use:

Unsupported format

CashAddr (without prefix): pp06e7h69y8pk5hncew6j9yhmhx5478m55yhjm9zpu

Supported  formats

CashAddr (with prefix): bitcoincash

Legacy: 3AQuLex6ip4knGSEfivnj4nuCLUEcfV38X

You will see an error message if you attempt to send BCH to legacy addresses.

Use the following tool to convert your legacy address to the new address format: https://cashaddr.bitcoincash.org
